About Sadhu Sundar Singh
Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889 – disappeared 1929) was an Indian Christian evangelist and ascetic. Born into a Sikh family in Punjab, he experienced a vision of Christ as a teenager that led to his conversion, after which he adopted the saffron robe of a Hindu “sadhu” (holy man) as a sign that following Christ did not require abandoning his Indian identity. He travelled widely as an itinerant preacher across India, Tibet, and other parts of Asia and the West. He set out on a journey into Tibet in 1929 and was never seen again. Alongside this book he also wrote At the Master’s Feet, Reality and Religion, and The Search After Reality, among others.

This Web Book reproduces the first English edition, published in 1926 by Macmillan and Co., Limited, of St. Martin’s Street, London (with The Macmillan Company of New York, Boston and Chicago, and Macmillan of Canada). The author's Preface records that the book was translated from his original Urdu with the assistance of the Rev. T. E. Riddle, and that Miss E. Sanders helped read and correct the proof. The Foreword is signed from Fulham Palace, S.W., the London residence of the Bishop of London — Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram held that office in 1926, and the Foreword describes chairing a meeting at which the Sadhu addressed the clergy of the diocese of London.
The reading text was prepared from the scanned copy digitized by the Internet Archive as item bwb_C0-ACA-167 (104 pages, OCR text supplied by the Archive). Chapter order, headings, and wording follow that 1926 first edition exactly: a Foreword, the author’s Preface, and the twelve numbered chapters. A small number of plain OCR scanning errors (misread letters, running heads, and page numbers caught up in the scan) have been corrected for on-screen reading; no word, sentence, or Scripture citation has been added, removed, or reworded. Scripture references that the author gives in parentheses have been linked, where the reference is unambiguous, to the corresponding chapter of the UECF.NET NKJV Bible.
Public domain status
Meditations on Various Aspects of the Spiritual Life was first published in 1926. Sadhu Sundar Singh disappeared (and is presumed to have died) in 1929, and the book’s original publisher, Macmillan and Co., Limited, ceased to exist as a separate company decades ago. Works first published before 1929 are in the public domain in the United States.
