When all is said and done, those who are utterly lacking in holiness will be sent away from God's presence into everlasting destruction (cf. Matt. 25:41). The context of Hebrews 12 confirms that this means practical holiness. Thus the writer of Hebrews, like John, James, Peter, Jude, and Paul, confirmed the necessity of righ teous works to validate genuine faith.
The few brief passages I have cited here only scratch the surface of the rich truth of the way of salvation outlined in Acts and the Epistles. I have dealt more thoroughly with the apostles' soteriology in a separate book.6
One thing is clear: the gospel according to Jesus is the gospel according to His apostles. It is a small gate and a narrow road. It is free but it costs everything. And though it is appropriated by faith, it cannot fail to produce the fruit of true righ teous ness in the life and behavior of the believer.
