The English text is the public-domain translation edited by the Rev. Marcus Dods, M.A., first issued at Edinburgh by T. & T. Clark in 1871 as volumes I and II of The Works of Aurelius Augustine, Bishop of Hippo. Books IV, XVII and XVIII were translated by the Rev. George Wilson; Books V–VIII by the Rev. J. J. Smith; the remaining books by Dods. The wording has not been modernized.
The transcription used here is Project Gutenberg eBook 45304 (Volume I, Books I–XIII) and 45305 (Volume II, Books XIV–XXII), produced from images made available by the Internet Archive / Canadian Libraries. Gutenberg headers, license blocks, and publisher advertisements are omitted. The book text itself is in the public domain in the United States.
Pagination notes in the Scripture and subject indexes follow the 1871 Edinburgh volumes, not a later reprint.

Augustine and his Victorian translators quote the older English Bible. Explicit citations in the notes, and the 1871 Scripture index, are linked to the UECF.NET NKJV Bible for lookup. The on-page wording remains that of the Dods edition.
