About this study

“Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!”

James writes to believers scattered by persecution, and he puts his finger on the smallest member of the body. Before the passage itself, the study sets the scene — who James was, why Martin Luther called this a “strawy epistle”, the timeline of the letter, and the four classic ways of reading Scripture. Then it walks verse by verse through James 3:1–12, and closes with practical application and prayer.

Bible versions used in this audio book

James, chapter three, verses one through twelve. The Tongue.

    Part one. Introduction.

Welcome, dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Before we look into the third chapter of James, let us do a quick recap on the overview of the epistle of James, and on the first and second chapters, which we have looked at so far.

A word about the Bible versions used in this audio book. The full Scripture reading of James chapter three, verses one through twelve, is taken from the King James Version. The verses quoted inside the teaching and the commentary follow the New International Version wording used in the original study notes, and they are identified as they occur.

So, who is the preacher? James, a servant of God, and of the Lord Jesus Christ. That is how he introduces himself in chapter one, verse one.

James is the half brother of Jesus Christ. He first did not believe in Jesus Christ when Jesus was alive. But he trusted him after his death and resurrection. And we have seen the Scriptures where he had an encounter with the risen Christ, and that was testified by Paul himself, in John, chapter seven, verse five, and in First Corinthians, chapter fifteen, verse seven.

Ancient historians tell us that James continued to live and to teach in Jerusalem, convincing many Jews, and many visitors to Jerusalem, that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.

He was greatly esteemed for his piety. He spent so much time in the temple, kneeling in prayer, that he was given the nickname, Camel Knees. Even his opponents, the scribes and the Pharisees, could find no fault in him.

That is the man whose letter we are about to open.

    A Strawy Epistle?

Martin Luther's criticism of the letter of James, and why James is in fact a vigorous call to a tested, mature faith.

    Part two. A strawy epistle?

In Martin Luther's version of the New Testament, published in fifteen twenty two, he put the books of Hebrews, James, Jude and Revelation at the end, as a supplement, rather than in their usual places. And he omitted them from the table of contents. He explained why, in his introduction.

He wrote: In fine, Saint John's Gospel and his first Epistle, Saint Paul's Epistles, especially those to the Romans, Galatians and Ephesians, and Saint Peter's first Epistle, these are the books which show thee the Christ, and teach thee everything that is needful and blessed for thee to know, even though thou never see or hear any other book or doctrine. Therefore is Saint James's Epistle a right strawy Epistle in comparison with them, for it has no gospel character to it.

Luther devalued James because he thought that James was responding against Paul's doctrine of justification by faith apart from works. Also, the epistle barely mentions Jesus at all, and never his death and resurrection.

In fact, the conflict between Paul and James is only apparent. James shows no sign of ever having read Paul's letters to the Romans or to the Galatians. He uses words like justification, faith, and works differently from Paul. And he never addresses Paul's teachings directly. Paul wrote Romans in about fifty seven A D, and James died in sixty two A D. So it is unlikely that James could have seen a copy of Romans.

Some people think James wrote around forty five A D, before Paul began his missionary travels, and before there were many Gentiles in the Church. If this date is correct, then James is the earliest New Testament book, and it is not a reply to distortions of Paul's writings. Instead, it is an exhortation to live what we believe.

On the other hand, some people date the letter around fifty five to sixty A D. If this is right, then James wrote during a time when Paul's views were being widely discussed, misquoted, and misconstrued. Apparently there were some people in the Church who thought that justification is by grace apart from works, and who then twisted that truth into an excuse for a careless life.

Now consider some plain facts about this letter.

Only two times is Jesus Christ mentioned by name, in James chapter one, verse one, and in James chapter two, verse one.

There is no mention of the Holy Spirit at all, and no mention of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The famous phrase, the Lord willing, comes from the book of James, chapter four, verse fifteen.

If a church has elders pray for the sick, it is because of chapter five, verses thirteen to sixteen.

Many Christian employers pay appropriate wages to their employees because of chapter five, verses one to six.

James deals with trials, temptations, knowledge, wisdom, favoritism, the tongue, submission, friendship with the world, faith, the last days, and prayer.

So, far from being a strawy epistle, James's letter offers us a vigorous, vital view of the Christian faith. It is a call to a tested, mature faith. His writing relates more closely to the book of Proverbs, and to the Gospel according to Matthew, than to anything else in the Bible.

Part three. Timelines, and a recap of chapters one and two.

    First, the timeline.

The death and resurrection of Jesus took place around thirty three A D.

Stephen was martyred around thirty four to thirty six A D.

In the Acts of the Apostles, chapter eight, verse one, persecution broke out, and the Christians in Jerusalem were scattered.

In Acts, chapter eleven, verses nineteen to twenty two, those scattered Christians travelled to Phoenicia, to Cyprus, and to Antioch, and they preached to the Greeks also.

In James, chapter one, verse one, the epistle is written to the scattered twelve tribes.

The Jerusalem council took place in forty nine to fifty A D.

James advised Paul to participate in a purification ceremony, in A D fifty seven. That is in Acts, chapter twenty one, verses seventeen to twenty six.

Some scholars say that James was written around fifty eight A D. But more of the evidence points to around forty five to forty nine A D.

Now, a recap of the first chapter of James.

Trials, lead to endurance. Endurance, leads to spiritual maturity. And spiritual maturity leads to the crown of life.

But temptation runs the other way. Temptation draws us away, and entices us. Being enticed, we sin. And sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death.

Wisdom is needed to sustain us in trials. God does not tempt anyone. James also teaches us the difference between knowledge and wisdom. And he shows us what true religion looks like.

Now, a recap of the second chapter of James.

First, favoritism, love, and mercy, in chapter two, verses one to thirteen.

John Wesley, who was the founder of the Methodist movement, once said this. Honour none, merely for being rich. Despise none, merely for being poor. He founded that movement in seventeen twenty nine, along with Charles Wesley.

Later on, slowly but steadily, the practice of pew rental started. It made distinctions between the rich and the poor. Pew rental became controversial among the churches, and eventually they moved to free seating, which became the Free Methodist movement in eighteen sixty.

A Christian should be the last person on earth to be impressed by the glory of social status.

Second, faith, in chapter two, verses fourteen to twenty six. James shows us three kinds of faith.

Demonic faith. This faith involves both the mind and the emotions. The demons believe, and they tremble. But they are not saved.

Dead faith. Dead faith involves just the intellect, just the mind, but no will. It agrees with the truth, and then does nothing.

And deeded faith. Dynamic, working faith. This faith is based on God's Word, and it involves the whole man, the mind, the emotions, and the will.

With that behind us, we come now to the third chapter.

    The Fourfold Interpretation

Four ways of interpreting Scripture: literal, allegorical, tropological and analogical.

    Part four. The fourfold interpretation.

Before we read the passage, let us remind ourselves how the Scripture may be rightly interpreted. There are four classic approaches, and they work together.

One. The literal, or historical interpretation. This asks, what actually happened then? What was the author's purpose? Why did he write? To whom did he write? And what was the context?

Two. The allegorical interpretation. This looks for the deeper spiritual meaning of the passage of Scripture.

Three. The tropological, or moral interpretation. This asks, what should I do? After reading the Scripture, we read it from both the historical and the spiritual perspective, and then we ask how that can be applied practically in day to day life. That is life application.

Four. The analogical, or eschatological interpretation. This applies the Scripture to the eternal fulfillment of all things in Christ.

Keep these four in mind as we listen to the words of James.

    Part five. The Scripture reading.

The epistle of James, chapter three, verses one through twelve. From the King James Version. Let us hear the Word of God.

Verse one. My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

Verse two. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Verse three. Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

Verse four. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

Verse five. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

Verse six. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Verse seven. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

Verse eight. But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Verse nine. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

Verse ten. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Verse eleven. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

Verse twelve. Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    Preachers and Teachers

Why James warns that not many should become teachers, and the accountability that teaching carries.

    Scripture James 3:1; 1 Corinthians 9:27

    1:38 MP3
    Read the transcript

    Part six. Preachers and teachers.

James begins, my brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. Or, as it is often rendered, not many of you should become teachers, because we who teach will be judged more strictly.

In the days of James, as the context shows us, many Jewish Christians wanted to become teachers. But they wanted the position without the real understanding of the word, without self discipline, and while setting wrong examples with their own lives. They would praise God, and at the same time they would curse their brothers, or show partiality. That is why James asks them not to seek to be teachers, but to set their own lives in order first.

Listen to how the apostle Paul spoke about his own life. In First Corinthians, chapter nine, verse twenty seven, he says: No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Teaching and preaching come with responsibility. They come with accountability. And they come with self disciplining, so that even the followers would have the same mindset.

In these last days we see false teaching leading people into the wrong direction, with so much confusion, so that Christians have become a laughing stock before the world.

So the warning of James is not a warning against teaching. It is a warning against teaching carelessly. If you would open your mouth for God, first let God rule your mouth.

    The Power of the Tongue

The bit, the rudder and the fire: why words carry the power of life and death.

    2:56 MP3

Part seven. The power of the tongue.

Chapter three, verses two through four. We all stumble in many ways.

For we all stumble in many ways. That sentence is the explanation for why not many people should desire to be teachers. If it is so easy to stumble in what we say, then not many should seek to be teachers, because being a teacher involves a greater level of accountability.

The larger, overall theme of this passage, when it comes to words, is this. The right words, spoken at the right time, with the right attitude, bring life. While the wrong words, spoken at the wrong time, with the wrong attitude, bring death.

You can trace that theme right through the Bible. Genesis chapter three. Deuteronomy chapter thirty, verses eleven to twenty. Deuteronomy chapter thirty two, verses forty six and forty seven. Proverbs chapter eleven, verse eleven. Proverbs chapter eighteen, verse twenty one. Matthew chapter four, verse four. John chapter six, verse sixty three. Romans chapter three, verses thirteen and fourteen. And James chapter one, verse eighteen.

James makes two statements that boast great power. First, the power of a bit and of a rudder, in chapter three, verses three to five. And second, that the tongue is a fire, setting on fire the whole course of life, in chapter three, verses five and six. Both of these fit into this theme of the power of words.

A bit is small, but it turns the whole horse. A rudder is small, but it turns a great ship in a fierce wind. So it is with the tongue. It is a little member, and it boasts great things.

Because words have the power of life and death, evil words defile the one who speaks them. See Matthew chapter five, verse twenty two, and Matthew chapter fifteen, verses seventeen to twenty.

And each person must give an account of every word they have spoken. Matthew chapter twelve, verse thirty six.

James agrees. The tongue corrupts the whole body, in chapter three, verse six. And teachers will be held to a stricter judgment, in chapter three, verse one.

Hear the word of Proverbs, chapter eighteen, verse twenty one. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

And hear the beautiful word of Hebrews, chapter thirteen, verse fifteen. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

The very same tongue that can set a forest on fire, can offer up to God the sacrifice of praise. That is the choice set before us every single day.

The Untamable Tongue and the Heart

Three reasons the tongue is the best measure of Christian maturity: it is powerful, untamable, and it reveals the heart.

    Scripture James 3:7-12; Luke 6:45; Matthew 12:34

    2:58 MP3
    Read the transcript

Part eight. The untamable tongue, and the condition of the heart.

Here is the heart of the teaching. The tongue is the best measure of Christian maturity, because it is so powerful, because it is naturally untamable, and because it reveals the condition of one's heart.

    James gives us three reasons.

The first reason why the tongue is such a good measure of maturity, is that it is so powerful. Chapter three, verses three to six.

It has the power to do good for others. Chapter three, verses three to five. A word spoken in season, how good it is. A word of encouragement can turn a whole life around, just as a small bit turns a great horse.

And it has the power to destroy others. Chapter three, verses five and six. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth. One careless sentence can burn down a friendship, a family, or a whole congregation.

The second reason is that the tongue is naturally untamable. Chapter three, verses seven and eight. Every kind of beast, and of bird, and of serpent, and of creature in the sea, has been tamed by mankind. But the tongue can no man tame. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Notice carefully. James does not say that the tongue cannot be tamed by God. He says that no man can tame it. What is impossible for man is possible for God. That is why this is a matter for prayer, and not merely for effort.

The third reason is that the tongue shows the condition of the heart. Chapter three, verses nine to twelve. With the tongue we bless God, even the Father. And with the same tongue we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Then James gives us three pictures from nature. A fountain does not send out sweet water and bitter water from the same opening. A fig tree cannot bear olive berries. A vine cannot bear figs. And no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.

In other words, the mouth is not the problem. The mouth is the evidence. The fountain is the heart.

The Lord Jesus said the same thing. In Luke, chapter six, verse forty five, a good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good, and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil, for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

And in Matthew, chapter twelve, verse thirty four, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

So whatever is there in the heart, the mouth speaks. If we want a different mouth, we must ask God for a different heart.

  9. Track 09

    Practical Christian Application

Life application: examining the words we use every day, and letting God cleanse the fountain of the heart.

    Scripture James 3:8-12; Psalm 141:3; Ephesians 4:29

    2:54 MP3
    Read the transcript

    Part nine. Practical Christian application.

Now we come to the part that matters most in daily life. Over the next few sessions, we can pick words which we can meditate upon, because the word of God clearly says, no one can tame the tongue.

So let us ask ourselves two honest questions.

First. Which words are we facing challenges with, on a day to day basis? Not the words of other people. Our own words.

Second. What words do we use in common speech, that we should not be using at all?

Take a moment with that. In the home, in the office, in the church, on the telephone, and on social media. Where does the fire start?

Here are some practical steps that flow directly out of this passage.

One. Watch the small hinge. A bit is small, and a rudder is small. The small remark, the small joke at someone's expense, the small exaggeration. These are the things that steer a whole life. Guard the small words.

Two. Put out the fire early. A great forest is set ablaze by a small fire. When a conversation begins to turn to gossip, to slander, or to anger, that is the moment to stop, not five sentences later.

Three. Do not settle for two mouths. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. If we bless God on Sunday and wound people on Monday, the problem is not our schedule. It is our heart.

Four. Deal with the fountain, and not only with the stream. The fig tree bears figs because it is a fig tree. Ask God to change the treasure of the heart, and the words will follow.

Five. Make your tongue an altar. Hebrews, chapter thirteen, verse fifteen, calls our praise the fruit of our lips. The same tongue that can poison, can also offer up worship, thanksgiving, encouragement, and the gospel itself.

Six. Pray the prayer of the Psalmist. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth. Keep the door of my lips. Psalm one hundred and forty one, verse three.

Seven. Build others up. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians, chapter four, verse twenty nine.

Remember, no man can tame the tongue. But we do not come to God as men only. We come as his children, and we ask our Father to do in us what we cannot do in ourselves.

Part ten. Key lessons, and our closing prayer.

Let us gather up the key lessons from James, chapter three, verses one through twelve.

One. Teaching is a holy responsibility. Those who teach will be judged more strictly, so let no one seek the platform before he has surrendered his life.

Two. We all stumble in many ways. The person who does not stumble in word is a mature person, able to bridle the whole body.

Three. The tongue is small, but it steers, like a bit and like a rudder.

Four. The tongue is a fire. A small spark can set a great forest ablaze.

Five. No man can tame the tongue. Only God can.

Six. Blessing and cursing must not come out of the same mouth.

Seven. The mouth reveals the heart. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Eight. The tongue that cannot be tamed by man can still be given to God as an instrument of praise, the fruit of our lips.

    Let us pray.

Our Father in heaven, we thank you for your holy Word, and for the faithful warning of your servant James. Lord, we confess that we have stumbled many times in what we have said. We have blessed you with the same mouth with which we have wounded people made in your likeness. Forgive us.

Lord Jesus, you are the Word made flesh, and no guile was found in your mouth. Cleanse the fountain of our hearts, so that the water which flows from it may be sweet, and not bitter.

Holy Spirit, set a watch before our mouths, and keep the door of our lips. Make our tongues instruments of blessing, of truth, of encouragement, and of the gospel. Let our speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt.

And may the words of our mouths, and the meditation of our hearts, be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

Thank you for listening to the U E C F dot N E T Audio Book. James, chapter three, verses one through twelve. The Tongue. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

The Epistle of James 3:1–12

King James Version

1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

2For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

3Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

Key lessons

What James 3:1–12 asks of us

  • Teaching is a holy responsibility

Those who teach are judged more strictly, so no one should seek the platform before surrendering the life.

  • We all stumble in what we say

The one who does not stumble in word is mature, able to bridle the whole body.

  • Small, but it steers

Like a bit in a horse’s mouth and a rudder on a great ship, the tongue turns the whole course of a life.

  • A small fire, a great forest

One careless sentence can burn down a friendship, a family, or a congregation.

  • No man can tame it — God can

James says no man can tame the tongue. What is impossible with men is possible with God.
